Destre Meyer was born in Doylestown, Pennsylvania to parents who were top breeders and handlers of Champion AKC St. Bernard’s and, later on, Old English Sheepdogs, Briards and Bichon Frises. Taught at a young age to work with and care for these canine champions, Destre eventually took over the family business. However, right from the start, her true passion was horses.
Destre’s first introduction to horses was as a small child watching fox hunters gallop across the back fields of her family’s property. Later both of her sisters started riding and after much pleading, Destre’s parents broke down and bought her a pony, Trina, when Destre was 7 years old. When Trina did her best to rub Destre off her back by brushing up against a tree, Destre’s mother decided she should have riding lessons.
At the local stable where Destre learned to ride, she was introduced to Saddle Seat Horses. Willing to ride any ride any horse available, she adapted quickly, tagged along to horseshows and soaking up everything she possibly could. But just riding wasn’t enough; Destre wanted to know everything there was to know about horses. Her passion for horses earned her a chance to travel to Wisconsin one summer and work for friends who owned a state-of-the-art Arabian show and breeding farm. All summer long, Destre traveled the Mid-west show circuit showing some of the top Arabian show horses.
Back home in Georgia Destre saw her first warmblood, a Hanoverian, at a local show, and she knew instantly that this was the type of horse she wanted to ride and show. It would some number of years, though, before Destre would be able to act on her decision. She continued riding and showing other types of horses and working in the family business, until finally, with more than 50 AKC championships under her belt and a successful career as a judge, she decided it was time to pursue her true passion: horses.
Destre’s first horse after making that decision was Millenium, who ended up being a top Dressage sport horse in hand, winning the Hanoverian Society's Reserve Champion Young Horse in 2001. He won Grand Champion at a Breed show in 2004. Also in 2004, Destre went into full training with Karen Lipp and bred her mare, whose foal, Pilot Master, was awarded the Three Year Old Hunter Breeding Champion Horse of the Year in 2008.
In addition to breeding and training horses, Destre has produced several shows, is working on finishing the USDF L Judging Program and is very active in the Young Horse Programs. Most recently, Destre was invited to become an assistant trainer and part of Karen Lipp’s Independence Dressage team. Destre will focus on developing young horses and providing a solid foundation for young Dressage prospects. |
